Pavo muticus (the green peafowl, the spicifer peafowl) , has 3 subspecies: P. m. ssp. muticus, P. m. ssp. imperator si P. m. ssp. spicifer (spread in Java, Malaysia and Birmany).
The features identifying this one are: the shimmering green neck and gizzard, the coverets are black with metallic blue sheen, the coronet is vertical and tight, being made up of different egrets comparatively from the shape viewpoint to those of the blue peafowl; the cheeks have a peculiar yellow spot in the ears' area and a light blue spot around the eyes; the legs are a little longer, which confers them a slender silhouette.
These features are common to both sexes, the male having the waist a little larger and, of course, a peculiar train.

Afropavo congensis (the Congo peafowl, the African peafowl), has no subspecies, it is widespread in the rainy forests of the Congo river basin.
It is only 70 cm long (the male) and 60 cm (the female); it is big, with a relatively short tail, and, as its dimensions show it, the male does not have the characteristic train of the two Asian species of peafowl.
