Peafowl Species

Raising peafowl in captivity goes back to the XIX-th century, when a few coloured species were held in captivity in England, as a result of repeated crossing within a peafowl population relatively few in number of species (White, Arlequin, Black Shoulders).

All throughout the last century, as a consequence of the special attention this bird enjoyed, countless attempts were made at obtaining new species of peafowl of particular plumage in terms of colour. The results ranked in several subspecies, within large species, known as "Colour Groups" or "Colour".

According to the latest conference of the United Peafowl Association (UPA) from USA, in October 2005, there were acknowledged 10 Colour Groups and 91 varieties for the blue peafowl. If we also take into consideration the three green peafowl subspecies (Pavo muticus) and the cross-breeds from the blue peafowl and the green one, 94 extra varieties add up to the above-mentioned number.

This topic is complex; briefly, the most important colour groups are:
India Blue
White
Cameo
Charcoal
Purple
Buford Bronze
Peach
Opal
Midnight
Jade

There are five patterns (that is the way in which several species or colour groups can manifest themselves or even intermix) acknowledged:
Wild type (barred wings),
Black Shoulder (plain colour on the back, without stripes),
Pied (spotted speckled),
White-eyed (spots on the train plumage),
Silver Pied (silver spotted).

For each colour group, there are 10 varieties (excepting the cross-breeds), that is: Barred Wing, Barred Wing Pied, Barred Wing White-Eyed, Barred Wing Pied White-Eyed, Barred Wing Silver Pied, Black Shoulder, Black Shoulder Pied, Black Shoulder White-Eyed, Black Shoulder Pied White-Eyed, Black Shoulder Silver Pied.
